A Letter to a Young Lady

Sixteen years ago today you were born. Where are you today? Whom do you look like? What are your interests? These are questions I have, but the answers are not available to me.
Sixteen years ago your birth came with pain. The pain of the knowledge that your birth mother who was not much older than you could not care for you in the way she wanted. She chose a man and woman whom you would come to call Dad and Mom. She did this out of the greatest gift a mother has...love.

Are you like your birthmother? Do you have a huge smile for those you love? Is your laughter infectious? Do you have a mischevious side to your personality? Do you eat huge watermelons until you are sick? Are frozen lima beans a delicacy to you? Do you eat the cheeseburger but not the bun? Are you passionate about your beliefs? Are you an activist? Do think deeply about many subjects? Do care greatly about our country? Do you have faith? Do you love your family?

Your Mom today can smooth back your hair and kiss your forehead. She will have presents for you. This day will be made very special. It must because your birthmother chose the best people to be your parents..besides your life this is the second gift she gave to you. She walked into a courthouse the day before Thanksgiving in 1990 to terminate her rights to you. She should have been hospitalized. She was so ill from complications from her hospital stay. She did this because she wanted your parents to hear about you and make their celebration on Thanksgiving more special. She wept on Thanksgiving from a pain so deep in her heart (in which only other birthmothers can understand).

She held me in her heart as I struggled to become a Mom. She rejoiced with me when they called to tell me our son had been born. She showed me with grace and elegance how to be a parent.

I hope you will come to know her someday. You nestled under her heart for nine months..you will forever be a part of her. She is a hero. She is lovely. She is your Mom.

Happy Sweet Sixteen!
